Mineral Diggin' in Arkansas

Science Professors Tiffany Green and Don Wheeler journeyed to southwestern Arkansas around the Hot Springs area to dig for mineral samples to use in the classroom. Our first stop was a local strip mine outside of Hot Springs, which was somewhat of a tourist stop, but we found some nice quartz specimens. Most of the "good stuff" had already been filtered out by the owners basically leaving the tourists to sift through the rubble. But still, some nice samples can be found and it was rather fun.

Professor Green brought along selected roadside dig sites found on the internet. These places were not easy to find and yielded little results but were certainly a challenge. We will be using the samples in our upcoming fall classes in 2010.
