Green's Geology Class Erupts!
Professor Green's Geology class studied the properties of magma and volcanic eruptions by using a combination of corn starch, water, vinegar, and baking soda. The purpose of the first demonstration showed the elastic properties of magma or of rock having properties of both a solid and a liquid. Finally students created an eruption in a flask using corn kernels representing rocks. The corn was expelled out of the flask when an acid/base reaction between vinegar and baking soda took place. Students also took note of how gas bubbles formed around the corn causing it to float to the top of the "magma chamber" before being expelled.
